    Supermercado
I went to the Super A near my house tonight and they were playing "Lost in the Supermarket", by The Clash.

In unrelated news, people keep saying they're emailing me pictures, and then I never get them.

This powerpoint thing I have to do for my chinese class has been a huge pain in the ass, and has made me want to commit random acts of violence. I think I'll just listen to some Slayer after I drop Chloe off at school in the morning, though. Or maybe the Misfits.

    • At 6:12 p.m., a caller from the 10000 block of Travertine Court reported an unknown person had cut threatening words into her backyard with a chain saw. Deputies responded and there was no vandalism. The caller said she would see her doctor to change her medication.

    Been a while
School has been going well. I thought I was doing worse in my Physics class than I should be, but then I was reminded that 80% is an A in that class, which puts me at a high B. An A is still attainable if I can keep up on the homework. He doesn't accept late work, so these weekly trips to Palm Springs are starting to be a problem. Fortunately I should only need to make one or two more and then I can be done with it for a while.

Another thing I'm having difficulty with is finding a way to create a powerpoint presentation in Chinese. I can't seem to get chinese input working on any of the computers I have access to, at least not without spending a bunch of money on MS Office add-ons. Of course, Microsoft doesn't just come out and tell you you need to buy these, they indicate all over the place that you can download the add-on for free and just install it. Bastards! I guess every once in a while I need to be reminded of why I stopped using their stuff.

On a related note, I still don't have sound working. Not sure why, except that perhaps the SB Live I got is one of those funky ones they made special for Dell. Also, it doesn't seem to fit properly, like the board wasn't cut square or something. I remember j0t having one like that years ago and having to use a zip tie instead of a screw to secure it, but it did at least work. I don't know about this one. Looks like I'll be buying yet another soundcard. Fortunately they're not that expensive, it's mostly just irritating.

I haven't even had time to try installing the replacement video card I got, so still no WoW for me. Oh well, if I don't have time to install a card, I certainly don't have time to play WoW.

And last, but certainly not least, I met a Japanese girl and we went to diner and a movie on Thursday, which was great. I have no idea if it's going anywhere, but I'm happy with it as it is, so I'm cool either way.

    Another Northward Trek
In theory I should be in GV some time tomorrow. We intend to spend Saturday at the Fair. This will be a short trip though, and a bit complicated.

    Damnation
Looks like I need a soundcard, as the built in one on my new motherboard is too new, and is therefor not supported yet. Fortunately they aren't that expensive, but still it's annoying, and probably means a drive to Burbank.
    7:40 am
    Continuing Saga
Still no 3d, and no sound either, effectively anyway. Everything seems to want to use the legacy oss stuff, which requires /dev/dsp, which doesn't exist on my system and I don't seem to be able to create it. So, I continue to fight it. On the upside, I'm learning a lot about how Linux functions internally, which is sort of the real point of my switch to Gentoo (though I didn't feel quite hardcore enough to go LFS (Linux From Scratch)).

In other news, I've signed up for classes. I'm taking Physics (Electricity and Magnetism, which is Phys4B at Sierra, IIRC), Mandarin Chinese, Yoga, and Intro to Real Estate. Yup, Real Estate. The idea of being an agent is fairly repulsive to me, but I like the idea of real estate investment, meaning I'd like to have some combination of rental properties, preferably commercial, and investment properties for exchange. My gramma has been involved in real estate exchange for decades, and if I can get a broker's license soon I'll be able to leverage her experience and contacts to get myself going. I still plan to go for the CS and Math degrees, and I'm liking the idea of going for an actuary certification, which basically involves getting a masters in math, or at least close enough that completing one wouldn't be a big deal. Actuarial work is the ditch digging of mathematics, all dirty drudge work, but I'm not one of those people who's completely enamored with pure math anyway, plus it pays by the bucket-full, so if I continue to live cheap I should be able to get out of here and set myself up in a more comfortable position in a relatively short time.

    Progress
Oddly, I don't seem to be able to reply to any of the comments people have left, so I'm going to throw in my replies here, along with whatever else comes to mind.

The Gentoo install is moving right along. It's taking a lot of time, but that was expected. So far I'm fairly pleased, almost all the problems I've had were of my own making (like copying important networking stuff to resolve.conf instead of resolv.conf *smacks forehead*). I'm working my way through stuff the slow way in some cases, but that's intentional, as I figure it's time I really got to know how this Linux stuff works. I must say that I really like the way they handle all the config stuff, the whole conf.d thing jives much better with my concept of how a *nix should work, while still automating a lot of the config file generation. Also, all the confing files they provide are extremely well commented, which makes it nice on the rare occasions when I have had to do some hand editing. Still having video issues, but I do have X running. Turns out that the latest version of Xorg, which is finally fully modularized (which they've been working on for some time now), conflicts with the current nvidia drivers, so until they release 9xxx for Linux I can't install nvidia-glx, which means no 3d acceleration for me.

Also, I have no real browser installed yet, so I'm stuck with links for the time being, which I'm sure is the cause of my inability to reply. I'll get on that just as soon as I'm finished ugrading to gcc4, which is tooking a really long time to compile, but not as long as libtool is taking, after which I'll want to recompile the whole rest of the system so everything links correctly (though that shouldn't take as long as libtool is).

Today I helped Alan order a new motherboard and hard drive, so he can take advantage of the hopefully still functional parts I replaced. Then we went to Whole Foods to get dinner, which was really good, and Barnes & Noble, where I picked up a couple books for me and one for Chloe. When we got home we watched Wag the Dog, which Samantha picked up at Fry's specifically so we would watch it. It's a really great movie, and amazingly prophetic, especially when you consider when it was released (which was right at the same time the Monica Lewinski thing broke).

Tomorrow we will go to the LA Zoo, and then perhaps to the Glendale mall, if we have time. I'm much more excited about the zoo.

    Aggravated
SUSE wouldn't properly recognize my video card, so I decided maybe it's time to finally update to 10.1, and hopefully fix some other minor annoyances that I've been plagued with, like not being able to sync my palm. Well, SUSE is being a bitch. Tons of problems with removing old packages, installing new ones, rpm database problems... it's almost like I downloaded Windows by mistake.

I was afraid SUSE would lose some of it's greatness when Novell bought them and started making changes, but I didn't think it would be this bad. I'm downloading a Gentoo install image now. Goodbye, SUSE, it was a good 7 years.

btw, I'm writing this on my Palm, so please excuse any typos I missed.

    Finally
My computer is functional again... more or less. It's not recognizing my new video card yet, so there's still work to do. I'm so close now, I can almost taste it.

Also, I sign up for classes tomorrow. w00t!

...but at least it's a dry heat
Palm Springs. It's hot, see above. There is a sand dune crushing the side of a metal quanset(sp?) hut on the side of the road coming in (Indian Ave, not Hwy 111, for those familiar with the area). I'm here helping my gramma catch up on her taxes.

Anyway, it seems that my power supply is fine. In the course of poking around in there trying to probe all the voltage rails I spotted a burned up something, probably a cap or diode. One of the little boxey SMD ones anyway, not the can type that puff up and sometimes explode, leaving a mess of white dielectric material all over everything, and occasionally sending burning globs of it shooting into the air (I saw that once while a guy was testing power supplies in the next bay over when I worked on the mfg floor at GVG. Awsome.)

I called my mom up and she agreed to buy me some new parts, so I will soon have a kick-ass machine again, rather than the simply adequate one I built over 2 years ago. Athlon 4600+ dual core AM2, 2G DDR2, GeForce 7900GT. I see good times ahead. I may even pick up a copy of Quake IV.

    Return to Sender
Back from GV. It was a good trip, though I missed a few people that I would have liked to have seen. Chloe was unreasonably upset about not seeing Eben. I did see Spartacus, but it had been so long that I didn't recognize him. I feel kinda bad about that.

Anyway, I've returned home to a broken computer. Probably the motherboard, though I haven't probed the power supply yet. Crappy.

    Bad Son
Well, it's mother's day, and I utterly failed to get ahold of my mom. I tried 4 different phone numbers, though, so it's not like I didn't try. Anyway, I know she reads this from time to time, so: Happy mother's day, mom! Sorry I suck.

    A Beacon in the Night
So, I met this really awsome girl in one of my math classes; smart, pretty, fun to be around, and it semed like we had a lot in common. We hung out every week after class, and a few other times as well.

    And then she killed herself.
